Manage Stressful Situations with a Resilient Temperament

As the HeartMath Institute, explains, “our mental and emotional resilience helps us to recover from and adapt to stressful situations that challenge us.”

We often face challenging situations in our lives, but our outlook is what will determine how quickly we bounce back. If for example, someone was laid off from a job and his reaction is:

Scenario 1 – “What am I going to do now? I don’t know when I will ever get another job. My life is ruined. Those wicked people. I hate them. How do they expect people to survive? I hope they lose their jobs too…”  stressed and overworkedThat kind of attitude will actually set you back even further. Firstly, such a reaction causes you to hold on to the hurt and to fuel the feelings into even deeper negative emotions such as anger and resentment. And if you look at it that your life is ruined and have doubts about when you will ever get back a job then you will hold yourself back from taking the necessary action steps required to get you back into employment as quickly as possible.

Scenario 2 – To give an alternative reaction, someone is laid off from a job and he reacts Looking for a job“Oh my gosh I can’t believe they have let me go, but you know what, I felt like it was time for a change anyway. At least this gives me the opportunity to look for something that is more suitable for me at this time. At least they gave me a severance package, so that should sustain me even for a short while as I search for something else. Let me start networking and checking the papers and see who is hiring.”search for jobs

The above are just ideas. It may not be exactly how someone may experience their situation, but the point I am reflecting here is if you go with a scenario one type of reaction you are focusing on more of a negative and setback outcome. While if you go with a scenario 2 reaction you are looking for positives in your situation and immediately looking into ways to bounce back.

The HearthMath Institute is a great resource that offers tools, webinars and articles that offers solutions to developing resilience. They also share stories of people who have overcome major obstacles through being resilient, so you can learn from those stories how you can do the same.

If you are looking for ways to monitor your stress levels or reaction to stress and rely on a quick and easy way to regain inner balance, there are tools that HearthMath offers as well. For example, there is the Emwave2, which is a portable device that you can use on the go and on your computer to transform feelings of anger, anxiety and frustration and quickly rebalance your mind, body and emotions.

We all experience stress in our lives, and life knocks us down from time to time, but with the right temperament and frame of mind, even the right tools, we can quickly bounce back and return to a state of harmony.
